Transition in English from Year 1 to Year 2; first ½ term. Developing an accurate and consistent use of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Writing for sustained periods of time, remaining focussed and concentrating on the task at hand.

English in Year 2 The National Curriculum breaks the programme of study into 6 sections. Reading is divided into: word reading comprehension. Writing is divided into: transcription composition handwriting and vocabulary grammar and punctuation.

English in Year 2- Reading Children will be taught to: automatically apply phonic knowledge, so that decoding has become embedded and reading is fluent recognise alternative sounds for graphemes read common exception words, noting unusual correspondences between spelling and sound read other words of more than one syllable read words containing common suffixes re-read these books to build up their fluency and confidence in word reading.

English in Year 2- Comprehension Children will be taught to: listen to and discuss a wide range of poems, stories and non- fiction at a level beyond that at which they can read independently discuss the sequence of events in books and how information is related discuss the meaning of words, linking new meaning to known vocabulary check that the text makes sense to them as they read and correcting inaccurate reading make inferences on the basis of what is being said and done predict what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far.

English in Year 2- Transcription Children will be taught to: segment spoken words into phonemes, choosing the correct grapheme and spelling these accurately spell common exception words the possessive apostrophe add suffixes to spell longer words –ment, -ness, -full, -less,-ly.

English in Year 2- Composition Children will develop stamina for writing by: writing real or fictional narratives writing poetry writing about real events. Children will consider what they are going to write before putting it to paper by: orally rehearsing writing down key ideas or notes, including new vocabulary. Children will make simple additions, revisions and corrections to their writing by: re-reading their work, checking verbs are accurately used in the correct form. check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.

English in Year 2 – Vocabulary, grammar, punctuation Children will be taught to: accurately use both familiar and new punctuation correctly use and recognise the forms of statement, question, exclamation and command use past and present tenses correctly and consistently Understand subordination and co-ordination Recognise and use the appropriate terminology for: noun, noun phrase, statement, question, exclamation, command, compound, suffix, adjective, adverb, verb, tense (past, present), apostrophe and comma.

HOW YOU CAN HELP! Encourage your children to discuss their learning, what they have enjoyed or found challenging. Listen to your child read daily and ask them to spot or identify the curriculum relevant vocabulary or punctuation. Encourage them to discuss the alternative graphemes and exception words. If you have the time, and your child is willing, practise spellings as part of sentence dictation, using the words in context. If you have a question please talk us so that we can work in partnership to support your child’s learning.

If you would like to book an individual meeting or have any questions please come and ask your child’s class teacher. Thank you for coming.
