PGR Forum European crop wild relative diversity assessment and conservation forum PGR Forum - EVK Fifth Framework Programme for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development Conserving plant genetic resources for use now and in the future Group 1. Should efforts to conserve CWRs be incorporated into broader planning initiatives? Population based initiatives: Genetic reserves for forest trees (national) Species based initiatives: Red Lists/national red data books (national) List of protected species ( national) National monitoring programmes ( eg Common Plants Survey) Euro+Med Plant base – national floras Bern Convention/EU Habitats Directive/ CITES species list International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agric Protected species from Botanical Socs and NGOs

PGR Forum European crop wild relative diversity assessment and conservation forum PGR Forum - EVK Fifth Framework Programme for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development Conserving plant genetic resources for use now and in the future Habitat based initiatives Promoting Areas for Forests Agri-environment schemes ( Less Favoured Areas –also applies under site based initiatives) Habitat Directive /Bern Convention Annexes of threatened habitats Marine Conservation initiatives Site based initiatives NATURA 2000 and Emerald Network ( Bern Convention) Important Plant Areas ( IPAs) Protected areas – regional, national, sub national, local ECONET Ramsar sites

PGR Forum European crop wild relative diversity assessment and conservation forum PGR Forum - EVK Fifth Framework Programme for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development Conserving plant genetic resources for use now and in the future To what extent do these initiatives include CWRs? Rather occasionally than purposely Purposely in cases of threatened species Mostly based on species conservation ( not genetic conservation) So what to do? Compare existing CWR catalogue with species covered by initiatives Raising of awareness of importance of CWR – especially species in the catalogue ( and priority species??) but not covered by initiatives

PGR Forum European crop wild relative diversity assessment and conservation forum PGR Forum - EVK Fifth Framework Programme for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development Conserving plant genetic resources for use now and in the future Advantages of incorporation of CWR DO NOT NEED MUCH ADDITIONAL EFFORT !! Disadvantages May not capture high priority CWRs Not much focus on genetic diversity So in conclusion: yes, CWRs should be incorporated into broader planning initiatives as appropriate.
