2 nd Quarter Journals

Journal 1- 2 nd Quarter What is one of your worst nightmares? Explain it in detail and tell me why it is so scary for you.

Persuasive Speech Assignment You and your partner have just been given a product. You are to create a poster advertising this product, and then a 30 second-1 minute speech persuading people to buy it. You MUST use at least 1 persuasive technique (appeals) and 2 rhetorical devices. Underline and label them on the speech you write out.

Journal 2- What are some issues contemporary society must face? **Remember to continue writing at least ½ a page for journals (to the middle hole on the notebook paper)!**

Journal 3 Why doesn’t Hester run away from the Puritan settlement? If you were in her situation, would you have run away? Why or why not?

Journal 4 What is your opinion of Roger Chillingworth at this point in the novel? Why do you feel this way about him? Has your opinion changed since the beginning of the novel?

Journal 5 What questions do you have about The Scarlet Letter at this point?

Journal 6 Anticipating the end of the novel ( which you will finish TODAY! ), how do you think the novel will end, given what you know now?

Journal 7 What was your reaction to the end of The Scarlet Letter? Why did you feel this way? Was the ending close to what you predicted in your last journal?

Journal 8 If society gave you a “scarlet letter” what would it be? Explain your answer. You don’t have to share this with the class if it’s too personal. ~Hold on to your Essay and Mini-Poster. Text from these must be uploaded into turnitin.com by MIDNIGHT tomorrow!! The Scarlet Letter Test TOMORROW!

Journal 9 Freewrite

Journal 10 If you had to choose the best television show ever made, which one would you pick? Why?

Journal 11 If you could wake up tomorrow with an ability to do something, what would it be?

Journal 12 Write down the elements of Romanticism that you found in “The Devil and Tom Walker.” Next, write down any SYMBOLS that you found in the story.

Journal 13 In society today, who do you think resembles Tom Walker, “selling his (or her) soul” for money? What have they gained and what have they lost because of their obsession with monetary gain?

Poe’s “The Raven” Circle (2)- alliteration- the repetition of initial consonant sounds, primarily used in poetry (Ex. Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.) Underline (2)- repetition- the use, more than once, of any element of language Highlight and label one example of: internal rhyme- occurs when the rhyming words appear in the same line (ex. I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers)

Journal 14 There’s “fun scary” (walking through a haunted house, screaming through a horror movie, riding a roller coaster) and then there’s “scary scary” (being in a car accident, getting caught in the ocean’s riptide). Describe the scariest experience you’ve ever had. Was it fun scary, or was it really terrifying?

Journal 15 Write about one of your most agonizingly embarrassing moments. Journals will be collected TOMORROW!

Journal 16 What is the scariest or most suspenseful movie you have ever seen? What elements made this move so scary/suspenseful?
