 Week 8

 By surprise, unexpectedly  The students were caught unawares by the pop quiz.  There is danger that a fire may get into a wall and continue to burn unawares until it is a much bigger fire.

 The right to vote  The 19 th Amendment guaranteed women’s suffrage.  People gain suffrage when they turn 18 in the United States.

 A tranquil, secluded place; to put yourself in a tranquil, secluded place  The monk cloistered himself in a monastery to hide from the world.  My cloister is a hidden spot in the woods.

 Yielding to supervision, direction, or management; easily taught, obedient  The dogs were very docile and easy to train.  I thought the child was docile, but then she started screaming!

 An excessive amount  There was a surfeit of cookies at lunch today.  Students often feel like teachers give a surfeit of homework.

 Not appropriate or suitable to the surroundings, doesn’t fit in  The preppy girl wearing a pink shirt and a bow in her hair was incongruous at the rock concert.  The hockey player felt incongruous when he accidentally walked into the cheerleaders’ locker room.

 Distant or reserved in manner, uninvolved  The strange man was aloof and never talked to anyone.  Your aloof behavior won’t allow you to make many friends.

 Extremely distressing, disturbing, traumatic, frightening  The harrowing car crash made Sally afraid to ever drive again.  The trip to the haunted house was so harrowing that George said he was never going to be able to sleep.

 Continuing for a long time, continuous  She has chronic headaches.  He has a chronic problem with turning in her homework on time.

 To stress or emphasize something, make something more noticeable  Girls often use make-up to accentuate their facial features.  Your positive reaction to the snow versus my negative reaction to the snow clearly accentuated the differences in our lifestyles.
