P REVENTING AND O VERCOMING A BUSE Objective 1: Describe types of abuse and responses to abusive situations. Objective 2: Develop healthy strategies that help prevent physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Objective 3: Determine the legal and ethical ramifications of harassment, date rape, and sexual abuse.

T YPES OF A BUSE Abuse The physical, mental/emotional, or sexual mistreatment of one person by another. Affects people of all economic, racial, and ethnic groups. Fact: Most common among people involved in close relationships. 1) Physical Abuse The intentional infliction of bodily harm or injury on another person. Ex: Slapping, punching, kicking, biting, shaking, beating, or shoving another person. T YPES OF A BUSE CONTINUED … 2) Emotional Abuse Verbal Abuse- Using words to mistreat or injure another person. Ex: Name-calling, hurling insults, and yelling in a threatening way. Can harm a persons mental/emotional health by making the person feel stupid, worthless or helpless. Stalking- The repeated following, harassment, or threatening of an individual to frighten or cause him or her harm. Ex: Following a person, standing outside their home, repeated phone calls. Victims may often feel anxious, nervous, and unsafe. Fact: Each year as many as 200,000 people are victims of stalking.

D ATING V IOLENCE Dating violence includes… All forms of abuse– physical, emotional and sexual. Some teens may make the mistake that dominant treatment by a girlfriend or boyfriend as an expression of caring Possible signs…. Jealousy Attempts to control a partner’s behavior Use of insults or put-downs to manipulate a partner Use of guilt to manipulate a partner

D ATE AND A CQUAINTANCE R APE Date Rape- Occurs when one person in a dating relationship forces the other person to participate in sexual intercourse. Often the attacker is known in such cases Both males and females may be victims Acquaintance Rape- Occurs when someone known casually or considered a friend forces a person to have sexual intercourse. All forms of rape may be traumatizing or leave lasting emotional scars. g=mncol;lst;2 g=mncol;lst;2

A LCOHOL, D RUGS, AND D ATE R APE Fact: Research shows that alcohol use is involved in as many as two-thirds of date rape cases involving teens and college students. Date-Rape Drugs can include… GHB or Rohypnol “roofies” What is Rohypnol? A strong depressant drug that is sometimes used in treating insomnia, or the inability to sleep. Can be placed in food or drinks without a person knowing Can cause the person to blackout, and become an easy target What can you do? Never leave your drink unattended at a party Pair up with someone you trust to keep tabs on each other.

O VERCOMING ABUSE Remember…they are a victim, they did nothing wrong 1) If you know someone who has been raped, call the police 2) Seek medical attention and be sure to get a pregnancy test 3) Speak with a caring, trusted and knowledgeable adult, such as a parent or a counselor. (figure 13.3) Cycle of Violence Victims may see this as a “normal” way of life How to break it? Provide parents and prospective parents with opportunities to learn about family life. Support and counseling
