Personal Protest - Rosa Parks : Yesterday, we watched a video about Parks’ involvement in the Alabama Bus Boycott. Then, you were supposed to read the short excerpt from Parks’ autobiography. Now, using the information that you gathered about Parks’ according to the autobiography, fill in the side of the chart about the impressions you made while reading. Then, read the poem on page 280 about Rosa Parks. Afterwards, fill out the other side of the chart about the impressions you made about Parks according to the poem. Remember: you are reading about the same person, but both authors may have a different perception of who she was!

Maya Angelou: 1 st – Turn in the text to page 246 and read the poem. Then, read the poem on the back of the handout by Paul Laurence Dunbar. 2 nd – Fill in the differences between the two birds from the poems. 3 rd – Let’s discuss how these two poems were products of the authors’ environments. Compare Angelou’s poem to the poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar, the son of former slaves. Who’s poem is more hopeful and encouraging? Who’s isn’t and what reasons could apply to why?
