PROJECT COORDINATOR OIKONOMOUDIS IOANNIS The agricultural production in Ormylia’s region The causes of biodiversity reduction The benefits of olives diet

Integrated farming Integrated management of agricultural production, is balanced concern for the environment and the quality of products. Applying an Integrated Management System we achieve the sustainable production process with continuous use of all available information (for cultivation, the means of production and the environment). The main target is the excellent quality with the minimum necessary inflows (agricultural supplies, water, fuel, etc.) in order to reduce costs, protect the health of farmers and consumers, by applying cultivation techniques friendly to environment. At the same time is achieved the improvement of soil fertility, rational management of water resources, efficient plant protection according to legal requirements (no pesticide residues). It is ensured the crop yield, resulting the financial benefits and the promotion of environmental management.

Biological farming Integrated system of production and management of agricultural products, protecting the environment at all stages of ecosystem management, while defending consumer health. The main feature of biological(organic) farming is the absence of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, hormones and other equally hazardous substances at all stages of production. Biological (organic) products do not contain preservatives, additives and various other chemicals in their composition.

Agricultural production In the plain of our town Ormylia, in the past Cereals, cotton, corn, vegetable products and tobaccos. The arboricultural species which were cultivated was pear, apple, fig trees, walnuts and peaches.

Livestock production was well developed by rearing sheep, goats and cattle. Sericulture (cultivation of silkworm).

Agricultural production in Ormylia today The cultivation of the unique variety of olive worldwide, Hondrolia Chalkidikis for the production of table olives. Other arborists species: Pears, peaches and plums.

Greenhouse cultivation: 1.Vegetable products: Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, green beans, spinach, sprouts, beetroots, cauliflower, lettuce, eggplant, radishes, leeks, squashes, garlic and onions. 2.Flower species: roses, gerberas and cyclamen.

The causes of biodiversity decline The negative consequences of the explosive techno-economic criteria progress of science and technology have been the displacement from the scene and the gradual extinction, of many not essential and less competitive traditional agricultural and natural products. Intensive farming production of species with great economic interest (olives). Thus inevitably we were led to monoculture. The expansion of cultivated areas even in areas designated as forest. The predatory agricultural practices.

Olive cultivation The cultivation of olives reaches out of our schoolyard.

Olive production  In Ormylia there are mainly Chalikidiki's olives and kalamon olives and the annual production of olives is tones.  The most resistant variety for olive diseases are Chalkidiki's olives.  The olives are fruitful in the wood of the previous year and this strengthens the tendency to be fruitful every two years. This tendency depends on many factors, the most important being the variety, pruning and load size of the years of the great production.

The nutrition value of the olives The nutrients in olives provide a number of health benefits. The high levels of monounsaturated fat helps boost the strength of the body’s cell outer membranes.

The protection, along with the vitamin E and other antioxidants in olives, lowers the risk of cell damage and inflation. Stable cells can help prevent against a number of conditions, including cancer, heart attacks, strokes and gastrointestinal disorders.

It also can help control conditions like asthma, arthritis and hot flashes brought on by menopause. Iron and copper, meanwhile, are necessary for the health of the blood and liver. Dietary fiber helps promote digestive health as well as lower cholesterol.
