A MOUNT OF S LEEP NEEDED Toddlers need12-14 hours of sleep each night It is common for toddlers to take naps. Naps should last anywhere from 1.5 to 3.5 hours.

C HARACTERISTICS OF S LEEP Morning naps cease around 18 months. By age of 2, they do sleep through the night regularly. By age 3 often give up naps.

S LEEP D EVELOPMENTAL M ILESTONES Follow a bedtime routine Set limits for the child Encourage falling asleep independently Transition from crib to toddler bed Develop a regular daily bedtime schedule The bedroom environment should be the same every night and throughout the night. Encourage use of a security object.

T IPS FOR GETTING THEM TO BED Stick to a bedtime Get into the routine Put the baby in the crib awake Swaddle for the first three months Tune out sounds Let the sun in the room

N AP IT KNOW - HOW Time it right Follow the child’s lead by letting them sleep however long. Aim for the same time and same place. Set a pattern Make adjustments

B EDTIME RITUALS - STORIES Many children might like books read to them before they go to bed. To get them to sleep it might be common to do repetitive things It’s important to let the child pick the book so they feel they have some control over the routine.

C OMFORT DURING BEDTIME - THUMB SUCKING Children often like to suck there thumb at night. Thumb sucking is a way for a toddler to soothe himself, not only when he's sleepy but also at other times of the day. It may help them go to bed.

C OMFORT DURING BEDTIME - PACIFIER Pacifiers are a proven remedy to help some babies settle down and get to sleep. Using a pacifier during sleep can reduce a baby's risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome It is best to brake the habits of using a pacifier or thumb sucking early since they can cause teeth to not be straight.
