From Glasgow to Beijing Lesson 2 Background to Scotland

Learning Intentions Academic Goals –To learn some background information about Scotland that will allow us to start to compare China to Scotland Social Goals –To listen to each other and take turns to share information

Success Criteria I can give at least four pieces of information about Scotland My group will have a completed placemat and we will each have a completed table of information about Scotland. I will be able to complete a venn diagram for homework on the similarities and differences between China and Scotland

What do you already know about Scotland? Person number 2 in your group should take the piece of flipchart paper and divide it as shown below.

In your section of the paper write down anything you already know about Scotland. It could be to do with culture, fashion, landmarks, people or anything else you can think of – just write it down!! You have 3minutes to do this.

Now you will share your knowledge with the rest of your group. Everyone is going to take turns to read out what they have written down in their section of the placemat. Any information that you have that other members of your group also is written in the middle section of the paper. You have 3 minutes to do this.

Feedback We will now hear some information from each group. Everyone should be able to share at least one piece of information from their group on Scotland.

You are now going to leave your home group and form expert groups. Each group is going to be given a different set of information. You must read this as a group and ensure that everyone in your group understands it – Remember that you will be the expert on this when you return to your home group!! You must note down the key points in your jotter.

Home Groups You now have the responsibility of sharing what you have learned with the rest of your home group. Divide your page into four and put the headings –Overview –Facts –Media –Leaders Listening to the expert on each topic – fill in as much information as you can in 12mins

Lesson Recap Your task today was to learn some background information about Scotland. Everyone should now know at least four pieces of information. As a group you should check that everyone can give four pieces of information. Stand behind your chairs – you only sit down when everyone in your group is confident in doing this.

Homework Your homework task is to use the information that you have collected in the past two lessons on China and Scotland. You are going to transfer this information into a venn diagram, showing the differences and similarities between China and Scotland

Key Question Answer in your jotter Q) Do you agree or disagree with this statement? The different types of media in China are very similar to the media in Scotland. Give reasons for your answer.
