Student Organization Leadership Development (S.O.L.D.) Workshop Karin Klinger, M.S.Ed. Fall 2009

What is “Values-Based Leadership?” Leading from a foundation of the Five Values of Baylor University Student Organizations: I.Respect All Persons II.Be Vision- and Purpose-Minded III.Demonstrate Active Care IV.Demonstrate Good Stewardship V.Intentionally Influence

I.Respect All Persons Actively value and honor the similarities, differences and contributions of every individual as a unique and contributing member of the Baylor University Community. II.Be Vision and Purpose Minded Be positive ambassadors and representatives of the values, mission and purpose of both your organization and Baylor University. Refrain from activities that cheapen or do not advance these ideals.

III.Demonstrate Active Care Demonstrate active care for the emotional, physical, spiritual, and intellectual well being of every individual within and outside the organization. Do no harm. IV.Demonstrate Good Stewardship Operate with integrity in the management and development of resources entrusted to your organization. Create a legacy of leaving things better than you found them.

V.Intentionally Influence Serve as a positive force within your organization and the University. In both the leadership and followership roles that you have, build up, encourage, and advance the causes and purposes of Baylor, and your organization. Work to bring about positive change in all your arenas of influence.

Why did Student Activities adopt the Five Values? Minimize the rules-orientation reputation and function of the Department We as a Department and you as students need to make wise, values-based decisions Higher-level thinking = higher-level behavior All University policies fall under the umbrella of the Five Values

How do the Five Values influence your work? What does it mean to model the Five Values? Which of the Five Values does your organization best exemplify? Which of the Five Values does your organization need to work to better embody?

“We have in fact, two kinds of morality, side by side: one that we preach, but do not practice, and another that we practice, but seldom preach.” Bertrand Russell

What does it mean to be a “Values-Based Leader?” Understanding the Five Values of Baylor University Student Organizations Identifying and understanding your own personal values

Identifying your personal value system What do you value? Think of things that… are important to you define your fundamental character supply meaning to your life and work (within your organization) influence the decisions you make compel you to take a stand provide an atmosphere in which you are most productive/comfortable

Step 1: Select your top eight (8) values from the value cards provided – if you have a value that is not in the cards, you will find several blank cards you can use to create your own values! Use the green prompting statements to help you narrow down your top eight (8). Step 2: Prioritize your top eight (8) values from most important to least important.

Step 3: Define each of your top eight (8) values in your own words. Step 4: Think of your organization members, friends and family members. Would they be able to select the same top eight (8) values for you based on what they know of you and the behaviors you exhibit? Step 5: Make a commitment to your values!

“Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. Commitment is made up of the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than the words. It is making time when there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year. Commitment is the stuff character is made of; the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism.” Unknown, commonly attributed to Abraham Lincoln

Bringing it all together… How does your personal value system connect with the Five Values of Baylor University Student Organizations? Knowing your personal value system now and understanding the Five Values equips you to make the right decisions and to do the right thing throughout your leadership experiences!
