Presentation transcript:

Colonialism The establishment, exploitation, maintenance, acquisition, and expansion in one territory by people from another territory. It is a set of unequal relationships between the colonial power and the colony and often between the colonists and the indigenous population.

Picasso, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, 1907

The British Empire

Post-Colonialism Response to the cultural legacies of colonialism and of imperialism, such as the human consequences of controlling a country and establishing settlers for the economic exploitation of the native people and their land. Theorizing the formation of identity comprised of the perspectives of the colonial subjects and recuperation of historic cultural traditions How knowledge about the world is generated under specific socio-economic relations and between the powerful and the powerless

Yinka Shonibare. Leisure Lady (with Ocelots), 2001.

Intersectionality The theory suggests that—and seeks to examine how—various biological, social and cultural categories such as gender, race, class, ability, sexual orientation, species, and other axes of identity interact on multiple and often simultaneous levels, contributing to systematic injustice and social inequality.
