Bioscience- Safety Unit PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

Think about a sport you like to watch or play. List all the equipment an athlete must wear who plays that sport. Explain why that equipment is necessary. When you are finished, be thinking about what sort of protective wear is necessary in the lab.

You will be able to define and identify PPE. You will demonstrate how to use and properly dispose of PPE.

It is VERY important that you practice proper safety protocols in the laboratory. We will be working with acids, bases, and mutagens this year.

Complete a vocabulary square for: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Safety equipment issued to help employees in protecting themselves from the hazards of their work environments. PPE includes fire retardant or chemical-proof clothing, gloves, hard hats, respirators, safety spectacles, etc.

You need a picture of each with the following and the brief descriptions next to each: Gloves must be worn when handling chemicals as wells as microorganisms like bacteria. Goggles are always worn in the lab unless the instructor tells you otherwise. Lab coats should be worn at all times in the lab for protection against dangerous chemicals. They should never be worn when eating or drinking.

PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, In pairs without looking at your notes, have one person name one piece of PPE. 2. The other person must explain when and why the piece must be worn. 3. Repeat until all pieces of PPE have been identified.

Paraphrased the steps to follow for each of the PPE 1. locate- 2. apply/wear- 3. disposal/return- When you are done: Compare your summary to the summary of your partner. PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED,

Take out your bellwork sheet, and compare and contrast sports equipment with PPE using a T chart. When you are finished think about how you would teach a new student about the PPE we will be using in the class. Be ready to answer.
