The Animal Services Division of Volusia County is committed to insuring citizen and animal safety, promotion of responsible pet ownership and the reduction of pet overpopulation which is accomplished through creating partnerships within the community, investigation, intervention, spay/neuter programs and education as well as the enforcement of county ordinances and state laws. 2

Complaints are received into the office and entered into the computer, the officers in the field have laptop computers in their vehicles which access the complaints from one of 3 dispatchers. Barking Complaints Dog or cat bites Dogs at large Stray pick ups Trapping Injured wildlife Animal cruelty Dangerous dogs Referrals Questions Dispatchers receive approximately 6,000 calls annually. Complaints range from: 5

All complaints that occur in the unincorporated area of Volusia County are responded to and/or enforced by 6 animal control officers who cover approximately 1,300 square miles within the county serving approximately 130,000 citizens. Most cities have their own animal control agencies but Volusia County will do mutual aid with those cities if there is a need in an emergency situation. 6

We pick up over 2,800 stray and abandoned animals annually and receive approximately 600 emergency calls after hours and holidays. 7

We investigate animal cruelty such as; abuse, neglect, abandonment and animal fighting. 8

During disasters we respond to all animal related situations where evacuation is required. Tropical Storm Fay

We offer training to other agencies or rescue groups as well as community outreach programs to better educate people on different aspects of animal control. 10

Program started January 5 th, 2015 Significant drop in cat impounds Reduction in euthanized animals Savings to tax payers Cats that are trapped and picked up by animal control officers are transported to the Pet Vet Cruiser where they are sterilized and returned back to the general area. These cats are vaccinated, ear tipped and no longer produce off spring. 12

The Board is made up of different animal entities represented. They meet quarterly or more often if needed. They make recommendations for ordinance changes, fees and help establish Volusia Animal Preparedness in 1996 and developed the county’s disaster preparedness program. 14
