GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings Real-time Ocean Brief North West Atlantic Contributors: Naval Research Laboratory Mercator-Ocean Fisheries and Oceans Canada

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings Mercator: 1/12˚ Atlantic and Mediterranean (PSY2V3) Runs once per week, creates a 2-week forecast HYCOM: 1/12˚ global, pre-operational Runs daily: 5-day hindcast and 5-day forecast* C-NOOFS: 1/4˚ Northwest Atlantic, quasi-operational Runs daily, creates a 5-day forecast * Currently HYCOM’s slot has been reduced and the system does not have enough time to run up to the nowcast

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings ‘Events’ of interest Gulf of Mexico: deep Loop Current penetration with the potential for an eddy shedding event (Mercator) Gulf Stream: HYCOM’s performance of this western boundary current Labrador Sea: southward advection of cold water at shallow depths and extreme temperature gradient (C-NOOFS)

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings 1/12˚ HYCOM SSH with drifting buoys overlaid Animation from 10 October – 8 November 2008; only temperature assimilated from drifting buoys

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings Gulf of Mexico: Imminent eddy shedding event? 1/12˚ Mercator SSH analyses 15 Oct analysis 22 Oct analysis 29 Oct analysis 5 Nov analysis

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings Gulf of Mexico: Imminent eddy shedding event? 1/12˚ Mercator SSH analyses 5 Nov analysis 1 week forecast valid 4 Nov week forecast valid 4 Nov 2008

Observations assimilated into HYCOM via NCODA 9 October – 8 November 2008

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings Gulf Stream HYCOM SST with independent IR frontal analysis overlaid Frontal analysis < 4 days old = white, analysis ≥ 4 days old = black

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings Gulf Stream HYCOM SST with independent IR frontal analysis overlaid 20 Oct Oct Oct Oct 2008

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings Labrador Sea C-NOOFS temperature and currents at 00 m 30 October 2008

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings 30 October 2008 Very sharp subsurface temperature gradient Labrador Sea C-NOOFS temperature and currents at 50 m

GODAE Final Symposium Ocean Briefings Labrador Sea Available profiles Identified a cluster of XBTs taken in the vicinity of the sharp subsurface temperature gradient Can we use these to verify this phenomenon?
