Urban Challenge Sponsored by DARPA November 3 rd, 2007

Background Information Race put on by Defense Advanced Research Project Associations (DARPA) –Challenge for public to: 1) Increase new technologies for autonomous vehicles (driverless vehicles) –Possible use in war-torn areas –Saving human lives 2) Entice and enhance public interest in science and engineering

Background Information DARPA has sponsored three races –1 st Race – technology such that vehicles only drove 8 miles –2 nd Race (Grand Challenge) – many vehicles traveled 137 miles across the Mojave Desert Team Gray finished 4 th –3 rd Race (Urban Challenge) – 60miles in less than 6 hours – must obey all California traffic laws and by-pass/tackle obstacles.

The Stats 35 Semifinalists traveled to Victorville, CA –Qualifying Rounds - October 26 th – 30 th Based on vehicle safety ‘Unsafe’ vehicles are eliminated 11 Finalists chosen and will compete in actual race –Team Gray was not one of the finalists GPS Sensor difficulties – last car of the 24 eliminated
