Chapter 1 Getting Started

Objectives Learn to set up a work area using an easel, drawing table, or board. Grasp the importance of proper lighting. Know which tools you need in order to draw in charcoal and in graphite pencil. Discover how to pace yourself and step back from your work in order to avoid burn-out.

Lighting You need strong light on your subject and on your drawing surface. Position the light on the subject so it casts strong shadows. Position the light on the drawing surface on the opposite side from the hand with which you draw.
