Presentation transcript:

WELCOME! LOOK AT OUR BELL WORK FOR MONDAY:  [5 min] Bell Work: Reading Strategy CONTEXT CLUES  For example, read the following sentence: "Don't think of words as separate, discrete items, or entities." What is the meaning of the word entities?  "When we stayed at the military base, each Saturday we went to the commissary to buy the food and supplies we would need for the next week.“ What is the meaning of the word commissary?  Find a sentence in To Kill a Mockingbird with an unfamiliar word. Quote the sentence using MLA format and use the context to find the meaning.

AGENDA  [10 min] Sustained Silent Reading: Can a book answer a question you didn’t know you had?  Review norms—expectations that you are reading 2 hours a week at home, response in writer’s note book that should be kept in this room, recording pages read/setting goals, and conferring with Ms. Martin about your reading life.  You may read your choice OR To Kill a Mockingbird.  In your note book, finish this sentence: After reading ____pages, I am wondering about ________________________.  [2 min] Book Talk  Record book on our “Book Talk” list

 Allegory is a form of writing in which the setting, characters, and actions in the story actually represent something else.  There are two different meanings to the story:  One: the literal meaning (EXPLICIT) of the story (what is actually happening in the book)  Two: a deeper meaning (IMPLICIT) that the story represents.

ANALYSIS AND APPLICATION  [8 min] Analysis of chapters 2-3 in To Kill a Mockingbird  What could the classroom scene also represent or symbolize on another level? (Miss Caroline, Walter Cunningham, Scout Finch, Little Chuck Little, and Burris Ewell)  Think about a pyramid. Where would you place each character and why? Is it just about money? What else?

ANALYSIS AND APPLICATION  [20 min] Analysis of chapters 2-3 in To Kill a Mockingbird  Why would the author choose to do this?  Create a bridge map to show how a character is an allegory for something more meaningful. Watch my model example…  Focus question = what is an example of allegory in chapters 2-3 of TKaM?  F.O.R. = novel

EXIT CHAT  [5 min] Use sentence stems to share analysis of chapters 2-3 in To Kill a Mockingbird  The allegory I drew was ______ as ______.  This allegory is important because_________.  The author uses this allegory because________.
