Objectives Students will explain how wars in Europe spread to the American Colonies Understand the purpose of the Albany Plan of Union

I. British and French Rivalry A.France and Britain had been competing for wealth for centuries as they were the two strongest nations in Europe. B.The colonist of America were very involved in the Ohio River Valley and built a fort at Pickawillany. The French attacked and forced the British back. C.Britain had gain French holdings in Nova Scotia Newfoundland and the Hudson Bay by taking Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island.

A. Native America Takes Sides A.The side that received the best trade terms from the Natives and the most help would probably win control of N. America. B.The French had many native allies, but not take the land from them, and they married many Native brides and followed their customs. C.The Natives would often raid British settlements.

B. The Iroquois Confederation The most powerful group of Native Americans in the East first formed in They managed to stay independent by trading with both French and British. By the mid 1700’s The Iroquois gave certain trading rights to the British and this upset the balance of power between the two Nations.

II. American Colonist Take Action The 21 year old George Washington was sent in the fall of 1753 to Ohio. Gov. Robert Dinwiddie sent George to tell the French that the Virginians claimed the Ohio and that the French were trespassing and should get out. The French said, “ It was their absolute design to take possession of the Ohio, and by God they would do it.”

A. Washington’s First Command 1775 Dinwiddie made George a lieutenant colonel with a militia of 150 men and sent him back to Ohio. Washington established Fort Necessity along the Ohio Valley. Present day Pittburgh. Washington had to surrender and later released, but came home as a hero who struck the first blow against the French.

B. The Albany Plan of Union The Colonist wanted to fight and defend themselves from the French. Ben Franklin suggested the Albany plan that gave power to an elected legislature, “One general government.” They would tax, troops, and regulate trade. None of the Colonies were willing to give up their powers.
