The Texas Revolution

Learning Targets I can explain the primary American motive behind the Texas Revolution. I can examine the ways in which the Texas Revolution impacted the conflict between North and South.

What’s Going on with U.S. Territory? U.S. had a LOT more territory…so what about slavery? Missouri Compromise 1820

Background of Texas Part of Mexico (which gained independence from Spain in 1821). Encouraged Americans to move there. U.S. tried to buy Texas (several times)—Mexico got annoyed. Americans began culturally “taking over” Texas—including bringing slavery.

Slavery Issue in Texas Mexico had outlawed slavery. U.S. Southerners didn’t obey the law. Then the people of Texas want to be independent from Mexico. Majority were American slave owners, the rest were disgruntled Mexicans The main issue behind Texas independence for Americans = slavery!!!

Texas Wins the Revolution 1835-1836 = War Outcome of the war: Texas wins the war and becomes its own nation. Slavery allowed. Texas does not become part of the US yet. Mexico is upset with the US for helping Texas win. Northerners in the US worried about Texas becoming a slave state in the future.

Latino Population by County (2010)

Questions: What role did slavery play in the Texas Revolution? What was the economic impact of Mexico losing Texas back then? How was the U.S. impacted by gaining Texas back then? What has been the economic impact of the U.S. gaining Texas since the revolution? (through today) Do you think most Americans know about the revolution? Do you think it would affect their views on Mexican immigration? Should it? Why or why not?

Learning Targets  I can explain the primary American motive behind the Texas Revolution. I can examine the ways in which the Texas Revolution impacted the conflict between North and South. 
