Site Educator at Peter Wentz Farmstead Amanda Rockwood Senior Internship Spring 2007

Roles and Responsibilities of the Profession Planning and running programs at Farmstead (Ex: Sheep shearing day and the Servitude program) scheduling tours and groups for the farmstead Writing grants to get money for programs Giving tours to groups that come to visit the farmstead Dealing w/ all the workers, volunteers and people that come in Going to meetings

Activities and Projects I saw my mentor involved in Scheduling tours/groups coming to the farmstead Giving tours Locking up the Peter Wentz Farmstead house Making a nature brochure Planning and preparing for events such as Sheep shearing and servitude programs Writing a grant for the Servitude program at the Farmstead

Activities and Projects my mentor allowed me to participate in as a high school intern Shadowing tours and groups that came to visit the farmstead Having access to the office library to work on my colonial dancing research project Moving artifacts in the house Participating in Sheep shearing day

Activities and Projects continued Sheep shearing Day

This profession matched my expectations in the following ways… Learned a lot about entering a career in the history field and of the farmstead Fun – it was fun being able to do some many cool things, like move artifacts and shadow tours

This profession matched my expectations in the following ways… Interesting – got to learn some many new and different things –Helping w/ events, shadowing tours, researching a project etc Exciting – I got to do things people my age don’t usually do

This profession was not what I expected in the following ways… I didn’t realize how much planning and time goes in to making on event possible I didn’t realize how hard the Farmstead has to work to get grants and money for their programs and things they want to do on the Farmstead

The Environment in which I worked… The atmosphere in the office at the farmstead is really relaxed. Everyone that works in the office gets along extremely well w/ one another so they goof off throughout the day.

The Environment in which I worked… There was never the feeling of being rushed to do something. There are many volunteers and other people that come in and out of the office, so a lot of the times it is buzzing w/ people. But other times it can be really quiet. The phone is always ringing. There was never the feeling of being rushed to do something. There are many volunteers and other people that come in and out of the office, so a lot of the times it is buzzing w/ people. But other times it can be really quiet. The phone is always ringing.

The Environment in which I worked… The amount of people I work w/ in one day is probably about 2 or 3 at the most. There are many volunteers and other people that come in and out of the office, but usually I don’t work w/ them. I usually end up working w/ Kim my mentor, Morgan who is the site curator or Diane who is the director of the farmstead.

The People I worked with… The people that I worked w/ were extremely nice and helpful, whenever I needed help w/ something, there was also someone I could go to. Everyone got along great with each other, it was like one little happy family All the volunteers were so nice to me.

My advice for students interested in this field/profession… Join a historical society (Millbrook Historical Society) Start volunteering at a site or museum of some sort (Peter Wentz Farmstead, Graeme Park) Take history courses

I chose to intern in this professional area because… I have always enjoyed history and learning about it. It has always been something that interest me I love to travel and I think this field there is good opportunity to do it

During Senior Internship I learned… During my internship I learned that is definitely what I want to do w/ my life. I want to go into the history field and I hope to end up working at a historic site of some sort eventually.

During Senior Internship I learned… Maybe even possibly working at Peter Wentz. I just love the environment there, the people, the atmosphere, the events/programs that they do. I really lucked out on being able to work w/ such great people. I know that I don’t want to be a history teacher but by getting a job as an educator of a site like Kim is would allow me to work w/ kids which is something I still want to do even though I don’t want to be a teacher
