How do you get Lyme Disease? Transported by Deer Ticks Caused by spiral-shaped bacteria called borrelia burgdorferi can happen to anyone who spends a lot of time outside
How do you know you have it? The 1 st sign is a rash Other symptoms include: Fever Headache Fatigue Pain in joints and muscles
Second Stage :Disseminated Painful swollen joints Knees more than 90% Came as fast as 24 hours Stiff neck Face can be paralyzed Bells palsy
How can it be treated? You can take oral antibiotics Including…… Amoxicillin (a form of pennicilin) Doxycycline (a form of tetracycline)
Who is looking to stop this disease? The Columbia University Medical Center Center based on tick-borne diseases
Spread from person to person… Evidence has proven that it cannot be spread from person to person If a person with Lyme disease donates blood, then there is a chance that the receiver may get the disease Lyme disease during pregnancy can’t effect the fetus
The Rash ►►►►►►►►► Called erythema migrans (or EM) Which means “wandering redness” Lighter in the center where the tick actually bit Sometimes the rash is just solid red 6-12 inches in diameter The bacteria goes into your bloodstream Can look like a bruise on darker skinned people Doesn’t appear 30-40% of the time Feels warm to touch
