Reality TV

“Reality Show” (Broadcasting) a television show in which members of the public or celebrities are filmed living their everyday lives or undertaking specific challenges (via www.thefreedictonary.com) A television programme in which ordinary people are continuously filmed, designed to be entertaining rather than informative (via oxforddictonary.com) Any television programmes about ordinary people who are filmed in real situations, rather than actors (via dictionary.cambridge.org) Everyday Lives Challenges

“Everyday Lives” for Our Entertainment Jersey Shore averaged 8.9 million viewers per episode, a new record for any series ever on MTV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Shore_(TV_series) 4 out of the 5 Real Housewives of Atlanta aren’t actually housewives and the aren’t actually as rich as they appear and some of the cast had actually temporarily rented out the houses during filming http://jezebel.com/5110249/4-out-of-5-real-housewives-of-atlanta-are-actually-broke For three more years the deal rumored to be worth more than $40 million for the Kardashian family. http://realitytv.about.com/od/realitytvnewsgossip/tp/kardashian-questions.htm

“Challenges” Ordinary People Face on TV When casting for a Reality Show that involves a challenge, many areas of the show can be both false or prompted to make it more interesting. [For example: critiques on American Idol are based on about 30 seconds of actually singing. Judges are told to speak as if they are talking about more then what they’ve seen and the editor alter the clips to whatever they feel fits. Some times they aren’t even for the same contestant]

Things to Consider… Editing is the Key to Reality TV When signing a filming contract, you allow editors and directors to take full charge of what scenes are cut or kept. In drastic cases, editors will leave important parts out or change the order of events to make people sound both positive or negative. 2. Producers Make Final Decisions On Eliminations On shows like Survivor, Americas Next Top Model and The X Factor, judges don’t make the final decision. If they want to eliminate someone the producers like they will stay in. The producers are in complete control of the show and make any major decisions. 3. Not All Relationships Are Real Most (not all) reality TV relationships are fake. The Hills was notorious for this. Kristin Cavallari has admitted in many interviews after the show about how all the relationships were fake.

Things to Consider… 6.On Camera Interviews 4. Very Extensive Background Checks For Casting Nearly all cast members do STD and drug tests, carry out extensive psycho analysis’ and can even monitor you before filming. That way they know virtually everything about you before the show starts filming, so, they can be manipulating and tactile with their direction towards the cast. 5. Personality Change Cast members will agree how they will act with producers before they start filming. They may even tell them to act a certain way in order to get feedback from the viewers. 6.On Camera Interviews For example, in the Big Brother house there’s a diary room where the cast can sit on a stool and explain, vent etc. to the camera. Little do you know the on camera interview is often manipulated. They will tell you information you never knew to catch you off guard or trick you into thinking in a different way.
