Proposal to Improve UNet sm Reporting of Aborted Procedures and Non-Transplanted Organs Living Donor Committee Spring 2015

 Two types of incidents may not be reported through the UNet sm system at the time of event and therefore may be underreported: 1)aborted procedure after donor receives anesthesia 2)procedures where the living donor organ is recovered but not transplanted into any recipient The Problem

 Underreporting is likely because:  Recovery hospitals are required to submit the Living Donor Feedback form before any donor recovery surgery  Form asks only about aborted procedures and not about situation where organ is recovered by not transplanted  The question about whether the living donor recovery procedure was aborted must be answered “N/A” at this time  Current policy does not require that the form be amended afterwards The Problem

 Current system: What happens when a living donor organ is recovered but not transplanted?  The UNet sm system does not generate the Living Donor Registration (LDR) and Living Donor Follow-up (LDF) forms, which allows the living donor recovery center to report required donor follow-up – and the donor could be lost to follow-up The Problem

 To make certain the OPTN has an accurate count of: 1)aborted living donor recovery procedures 2)incidents when a living donor organ is recovered but not transplanted  To simplify reporting requirement for such events  To ensure that follow-up forms are generated so no living donor is lost to follow-up Goals of the Proposal

 Since 2003, 12 cases have been reported through UNet SM where a surgery was aborted because of a threat to the donor’s health after anesthesia was administered  Under-reporting suspected - the OPTN may not have a complete count of aborted living donor organ recovery procedures Supporting Evidence

 Contact the UNOS Help Desk to report: 1) aborted procedure after donor receives anesthesia 2) procedures where the living donor organ is recovered but the organ is not transplanted into any recipient  UNOS staff will make necessary changes to the Living Donor Feedback form What Members will Need to Do

 Mary Amanda Dew, PhD Committee Chair  Regional Rep name (RA will complete) Region X Representative address  Lee Bolton, MSN, ACNP Committee Liaison Questions?
