TODAY’S TASK Given the resources we have, including time, which priority areas do we want to identify as GOALS for the school counseling program? American Student Achievement Institute ASAI

Establishing Goals COUNSELINGGUIDANCE Sound Student Choices ACHIEVEMENT   

COUNSEING GOALS EXAMPLES STUDENT GROUP BENCH MARK TIMELINECURRENT DATA TARGET DATA Students enrolled in individual or group counseling Reach a personal goal set during counseling End of next school year n/a100

Tips... Make goals reachable (but challenging) Lots of people can implement activities to help students reach the goals (e.g. teachers, scout leaders) Don’t include goals that you can’t reach by the end of next school year. Goals should form a logical pyramid (guidance & counseling  choices  achievement).

TASK Create one or more School Counseling Goal Pyramids

TASK 1 - ACHIEVEMENT Student Achievement Goals Look at the Student Achievement Priorities. Given the resources we have, which of these should be GOALS for the School Counseling Program? PROGRAM GOALS

TASK 2 – STUDENT CHOICES Student Choice Goals What choices do students need to make in order to reach the academic goal in this pyramid? Look the Student Choice Priorities List. Do any of these apply? PROGRAM GOALS

TASK 3 - GUIDANCE Guidance Goals What guidance knowledge or skills do students need to make the choices in this pyramid? Look the Guidance Priorities List. Do any of these apply? PROGRAM GOALS

NOTE: Schools seeking the Indiana Goal Star School Counseling Award must include ALL of the suggested ASAI guidance indicators as guidance goals (to ensure that you have addressed all of the Indiana Student Standards for Guidance. Schools seeking the ASCA RAMP Award are not required to include all of the ASAI guidance standards as guidance goals. Schools should include only those ASCA indicators that are part of their goals pyramids.

TASK 4 – COUNSELING Counseling Goals What personal or social problem must some students address to make the choices in this pyramid? Look the Counseling Priorities List. Do any of these apply? PROGRAM GOALS

CHECK: Given the resources available, including time, do we have the capacity to implement activities to address all of our guidance and counseling goals? IF NOT: Obtain additional resources Omit guidance / counseling goals NOTE: If a goals pyramid no longer makes sense because you omitted key guidance / counseling goals, consider omitting student choice and achievement goals too.
