Adapting to their environment The Inca Empire Adapting to their environment

Geography The Inca Empire was mostly located in the modern countries of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. The empire thrived from 1000 to 1500 C.E.. The Inca capital was at Cusco, Peru.

Food The Inca had to develop varied sources of food because of the varying terrain. The Inca used terraced fields with irrigation systems to grow crops like potatoes, tomatoes, maize, and peanuts. They herded llamas and alpacas for meat, wool, hides, and dung (used as fuel).

Economy Based on Agriculture Incas carved flat terraces into the mountainous terrain in order to grow crops.

The Incas also developed a complicated system of irrigation to help water crops

Transportation throughout the Empire Work crews built an all-weather highway system of over 16,000 miles. The empire was connected with an elaborate system of paved "roads" which were really trails as the Incas had no wheeled vehicles. They also built fiber suspension bridges that linked the regions of the empire to Cuzco.
