Events in British Literature Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw (5 act romance). Eliza Doolittle is used as a science experiment, because a scientist wants to try to turn her into a Lady. Along the way she falls in love with Freddy, and questions the purpose of the science experiment Ulysses by James Joyce (controversial novel). Judge John M. Woolsey said it was “emetic” (causes vomit) and is a very dirty novel. It is about vulgarity and Celtic lyricism. There was controversy over whether it should be imported to the U.S. It is a commentary on the inner lives of men and women “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence. The story of a boy who has a gift for picking the winning race horse Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. A story that warns of a scientifically controlled future society. It also depicts parts of a totalitarian society Orwell publishes 1948 It is a nightmarish vision of future totalitarian England. Totalitarian is a government where political authority has all power.
