Find Mode, Median, and Outliers

Objective  By the end of the lesson, you will be able to identify the mode, median, and outliers of a set of data.  Standard 4AF1.2 - Identify the mode(s) for sets of categorical data and the mode(s), median, and any apparent outliers for numerical data sets.

Introduce  On your desks, you will find a box or raisins. We will be using these raisins for an activity on mode, median, and outliers.  Mode – the mode in a set of data is the number or numbers that occur most often. If no number appears more than once, there is no mode.  Median – is the number in the middle when the numbers have been arranged from least to greatest.  Outlier – is an item of data that is either much larger or much smaller than the rest of the data. A set may not have an outlier.

Raisin Activity  On your desk you will also find a worksheet and a sticky note. Make sure everyone at your table has one of each.  Please follow these directions:  1) Estimate how many raisins you think are in your box without actually opening the box.  2) Open the box and without taking any out, count the top layer of raisins and adjust your estimate in necessary.  3) Dump out the raisins on your desk and count each one. Record your total on the sticky note.

Raisin Activity  Next, let’s line up from largest to smallest. We are going to find the range.  Subtract the smallest from the largest and you will have the range. What is the range?  Next, I will call table groups to come up and place their sticky on the whiteboard where it belongs on the line plot. Make sure your total on the sticky note matches the number on the board.

Raisin Activity  Which total has the most sticky notes?  This is called the mode. It is the number that appears most often in our data set.  Which number appears to be in the middle?  To find the median, let’s line up again from least to greatest. If we count in from both sides the same number, we will find the true median.  To find median on paper, list the data set from least to greatest and then count in from both sides the same number until you reach the middle number.

Raisin Activity  Are they any outliers? Are there any boxes of raisins where the total was much larger or much smaller than most of the data?  You have just learned about mode, median, and outliers. Guess what? You get to eat your data!!!
