Direct Object A direct object is a word or a group of words that receives the action of an action verb. Direct objects answer the questions who or what. Subject + action verb + who/what? –The climber caught (what?) –The climber caught the nylon rope.
Indirect Objects Indirect objects tell to what, to whom, for what, or for whom an action is done. Comes between the action verb and the direct object. Subject + action verb + who/what (DO) + to whom/for whom? –The rescue team gives (what?) –The rescue team gives hot food (to whom?) –The rescue team gives the survivors hot food.
What to Eliminate When searching for objects, eliminate: –prepositional phrases –adjectives –adverbs Ex: The adorable kitten caught the red ball in its paws. ball in its paws.
