Introduction to Bioengineering Presented to Chabot College ENGR10 • Nov06 Ovijit Chaudhuri PhD candidate Department of Bioengineering, University of California Berkeley Ovijit Chaudhuri, PhD candidate Department of Bioengineering, University of California Berkeley 1

What is Bioengineering? Applying engineering techniques/analysis and technology to biological and medical problems. Some areas (biomedical engineering) are focused on medical applications and using technology for solutions to healthcare problems (traditional). Others are focused on using engineering principles and ideas to understand the way biological systems are constructed. Bioengineering is very interdisciplinary encompassing various fields. Ovijit Chaudhuri, PhD candidate Department of Bioengineering, University of California Berkeley 2

Prosthetics – Hip replacement Ovijit Chaudhuri, PhD candidate Department of Bioengineering, University of California Berkeley 3

Medical Imaging MRI, PET, CAT, etc … Cuellar Clinic website Ovijit Chaudhuri, PhD candidate Department of Bioengineering, University of California Berkeley 4

Biomechanics How stiff does the hip replacement need to be? What kind of loads will it experience? Ovijit Chaudhuri, PhD candidate Department of Bioengineering, University of California Berkeley 5

Biomaterials Mechanical properties? Materials that are easy to mold? What kind of materials are biocompatible? Wear, tear, corrosion. Immune Response? www.machinedesign.com Ovijit Chaudhuri, PhD candidate Department of Bioengineering, University of California Berkeley 6
