2 When operations are managed well: - costs are low - quality is high - profitability is high Examples: –Taco Bell - saved $40 million in 3 years –Elevator mirrors in Las Vegas - reduced customer complaints about waiting –Santa Monica freeway repair after earthquake - did in 4 months what should have taken 2 years

3 Important information: u SOM 120 is not an operations management course – statistics are used in all options, including marketing, finance, accounting, etc. u As such, SOM 120 should not be used as a gauge of what will be learned in other SOM courses u To test this for yourself, we recommend taking SOM 306 before making a final decision on your option (as well as 300-level courses in other options) u (Some students take SOM 306 and/or 307 late in their degree, after which they wish they had chosen SOM as a major -- but by then its too late to switch.)
