Presentation transcript:

The need for an Academy The Academy will play its unique part in helping to shape new landscapes emerging from research policies in the United Kingdom. We believe the Academy can offer a unique contribution and add value because – The Academy offers a United Kingdom perspective The Academy can provide views from clinicians, practitioners, researchers, educators and providers of service The Academy is unique and has strength through its multi- organisational composition The Academy can help to articulate patient experiences of nursing, midwifery and health visiting research

The vision and mission of the Academy The Academy wishes to play an active part in maximising research for patient benefit and enhancing the return of the public’s investment in health related research. The prime concern of the Academy is - ‘to be an expert collaborative voice for all aspects of research involving nursing, midwifery and health visiting in the United Kingdom, including policy development, its implementation and evaluation through negotiation and dialogue with other key stakeholders’.

Work streams for the Academy The Academy identifies key areas of work where it can make a difference, these are further finessed each year at our annual colloquium. An annual Colloquium to gather senior leaders from service and research (3 held thus far). – The Academy is actively seeking funding for a senior academic appointment to join the Academy team. A mentorship scheme for senior nurse and midwife leaders from service and academia funded by the Health Foundation started in The Academy held a residential summit meeting for senior nurses, midwives and health visitors with the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement in A second event is being planned for 2010 – The Academy is actively seeking funding for Innovation Fellowships

Work streams - continued Research leadership and capability is being developed during 2010 in two significant ways – A ‘think tank’ will be held in Manchester in June (jointly hosted by the Academy and CLRN to consider the career prospects of nurses working clinical research centres. Our debate will be assisted by the NMC, NHS Employers and NIHR. – In collaboration with the University of Cambridge and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust a series of lectures focussing on clinically based research has been developed. – The Academy is seeking active engagement in the leadership development work of the DH and the NHS Institute. A Delphi survey of senior nurses in service and academia to develop a shortlist of research topics agreed between senior leaders from service and research. This was presented to our 2010 Colloquium and work is now underway to take the views of people who use services. A continuous strategy is underway to secure funding to continue the work of the Academy
