Elements of Style Chapter 2: Elementary Principles of Composition English 11 Honors Mr. Ambrose

12. Suitable Design Choose a suitable design and hold to it. The first principle of composition, therefore is to foresee or determine the shape of what is to come and pursue that shape.

13. Paragraphs Make the paragraph the unit of composition. After the paragraph has been written, examine it to see whether division will improve it The opening sentence (topic sentence) simply indicates by its subject the direction the paragraph is to take.

14. Active Voice There were a great number of dead leaves lying on the ground. At dawn the crowing of the rooster could be heard. The reason he left college was that his health became impaired. It was not long before she was very sorry that she had said what she had. Dead leaves covered the ground. The cock’s crow came with dawn. Failing health compelled him to leave college. She soon repented her words.

15. Positive Form He was not very often on time. She did not think that studying Latin was a sensible way to use one’s time. The Taming of the Shrew is rather weak in spots. Shakespeare does not portray Katherine as a very admirable character, nor does Bianca remain long in memory as an important character in Shakespeare’s works. He usually came late. She thought the study of Latin a waste of time. The women in The Taming of the Shrew are unattractive. Katharine is disagreeable, Bianca insignificant.

16. Definite, concrete language A period of unfavorable weather set in. He showed satisfaction as he took possession of his well- earned reward. It rained every day for a week. He grinned as he pocketed the coin.

17. Omit needless words The question as to whether There is no doubt but that Used for fuel purposes He is a man who This is a subject that The reason why is that Whether No doubt Used for fuel He This subject Because

18. Loose sentences Avoid a succession of loose sentences.

19. Coordinate ideas Express coordinate ideas in similar form. BAD – Formerly, science was taught by the textbook method, while now the laboratory method is employed. GOOD – Formerly, science was taught by the textbook method; now it is taught by the laboratory method.

20. Related words Keep related words together. BAD – Toni Morrison, in Beloved, writes about characters who have escaped from slavery but are haunted by its heritage. GOOD – In Beloved, Toni Morrison writes about characters who have escaped from slavery but are haunted by its heritage.

21. Summary tense In summaries, keep to one tense. Shifting from one tense to another gives the appearance of uncertainty and irresolution. When we discuss literature, we generally want to stay in the present tense.

22. Emphatic Words Place the emphatic words of a sentence at the end. BLAH - Humanity has hardly advanced in fortitude since that time, though it has advanced in many other ways. BETTER – Since that time, humanity has advanced in many ways, but it has hardly advanced in fortitude.

To Review… Suitable design Paragraphs Active voice Positive form Specific language Omit needless words Avoid loose sentences Coordinated ideas Related words One tense in summaries Emphatic words at the end
