CREATING A CLASS COMMUNITY What does it take to create a respectful class community? Our goal today is to draft a class contract that will reinforce our community norms and make this room safe for discussion. Fill out the class contract survey. Find a group of 3-4 students you don’t know very well. Come up with a list of the TWO most important rules we should include in our class contract.

LET’S BRAINSTORM. What guidelines are essential to include on our class contract?

LET’S PRACTICE. We will have a class debate to put our contract ideas into action. The debate is based on the Take a Stand worksheet you completed yesterday in class. Take out the “Take a Stand: AAH” worksheet as a reference before we begin.

DEBATE TIME… MOVE TO THE WINDOWS If you AGREE. MOVE TO THE DOOR If you Disagree. My race impacts my life more than any other part of my identity.

DEBATE TIME… MOVE TO THE WINDOWS If you AGREE. MOVE TO THE DOOR If you Disagree. There is less racism in the U.S. now than there was in the past.

DEBATE TIME… MOVE TO THE WINDOWS If you AGREE. MOVE TO THE DOOR If you Disagree. It is inappropriate to learn African American history from a white person.

DEBATE TIME… MOVE TO THE WINDOWS If you AGREE. MOVE TO THE DOOR If you Disagree. African American history should be a separate class than U.S. history.

DEBATE TIME… MOVE TO THE WINDOWS If you AGREE. MOVE TO THE DOOR If you Disagree. Slavery is no longer relevant when discussing race relations in America.

HOW DID WE DO? What did we do well in our debates today? What could we improve? Are there any additional rules or guidelines we should add to the class contract based on what happened in our debate?

LET’S SIGN THAT CONTRACT.
