SOL Quiz 4 English Colonies II

1. The main exports from colonial New England were a. fish and timber b. cotton and tobacco c. sugar and tobacco d. molasses and cotton While most New Englanders were able to farm enough to provide for themselves, the soil and climate of New England made it difficult for settlers there to raise crops for export. So many New Englanders turned to the sea and forests. They found abundant fish in nearby waters, while harvesting the huge, straight trees to serve as masts for English ships.

2. Which of the following was the FIRST "cash crop" of the English colonies? a. tobacco b. indigo c. rice d. cotton When the first settlers arrived in Virginia in the early 17th century, they were looking for a product that they could send to England for a profit. The climate of the upper South grew tobacco particularly well, and soon settlers focused on producing large amounts of tobacco for export to England.

3. John Rolfe a. introduced automated cloth-making to New England b. was a ship designer who built the original Yankee Clipper c. halted a Spanish invasion from Florida d. developed the commercial growing of tobacco He experimented with Spanish tobacco to create a strain that thrived in the Virginia environment. This provided Virginia with a valuable export that enabled the survival of the colony.

4. The House of Burgesses is historically significant because it was the a. first colonist-controlled legislature b. site where several Salem women were found guilty of witchcraft c. first democratic government in the world d. first meeting house of the Society of Friends (Quakers) The House of Burgesses was created when the London Company agreed to allow the settlers in Virginia to write their own laws. The "free" men of the colony voted for representatives to the legislature. The laws created by the House of Burgesses, however, were subject to the veto of the governor.

5. What name was given to those who, in exchange for passage to America, agreed to work without wages for a certain number of years? a. serfs b. tenant farmers c. patrons d. indentured servants Indentured servants signed a contract promising to work for a number of years, usually 7 to 14, in exchange for paid passage to the colonies. Indentured servants were employed throughout the colonies. In the early 17th century they were especially popular with Southern planters, who used them to work tobacco plantations.
