Uses for Coal Today. Coal is still used a lot today. There are many other types of fuels being used so coal is not longer the number 1 fuel type. We use coal for the same reasons they were used during the Industrial Revolution. Coal is used as a liquid fuel, electricity, steel production, and cement manufacturing..

Coal in Schuylkill county Coal mining came to an end after the World War II and the Great Depression. Coal was no longer in as much of demand because other fossil fuel were being used such as natural gases and oil. There is still four billion tons of coal in the ground in Schuylkill county.

What other types of fuels are used besides coal? There are other types of fossil fuels, but there is also cleaner fuels. Some clean fuels are; water power, sun power, and wind power.

Water Power Water is run through a hydro-generator to produce electricity. Water Power is renewable, clean, and cheap. Water Power does not produce a lot of electricity during summer months when water evaporates.

Wind Power A wind Turbine is used to create electricity. Wind power is cheap because wind is free! Wind power is also renewable. Wind Turbines take up a lot of space. They also can harm birds.

Sun/ Solar Power Solar Power is when the sun creates electricity. The suns light is a form of energy and when it hits certain objects it can create electricity. A solar panel has the certain objects in it that absorbs the suns like and creates electricity. Solar energy can be very expensive to start because solar panel are not cheap! Solar energy also does not work when the sun is down.

Statue in Minersville Pa. A tribute to the miners who risked their lives to provide fuel for the Industrial Revolution.
