Design Process TED 105 Fall 2012

Define the Problem (ask) Clearly state the problem –Problem statement –Needs assessment –Design criteria & goals –Research

Solution Possibilities (imagine) Brainstorm Ideation Creative Thinking

Evaluation of Solutions (plan) Do the ideas meet the design criteria? List advantages / disadvantages Assessment tool for the solutions Decision Matrix Select best design

Test Solution (create) Build solution Technical Drawings Prototype Models Performance User Testing

Modify (Improve) Solution Design problems (errors) fixes Improvement of design from data assessment Is more testing required? Worse case – trash and start over

Final Solution Final Drawings of solution Manuals for users and assembly Operation guide Maintenance requirements

Challenge Design a structure to hold up as many books as possible 1 ½” to 2’’ off the ground for a minimum of 10 seconds, using only the material provided: –10 sheets of paper –5 paper clips 10 minutes to come up with and document designs 6 minutes to build 4 minutes to test and adjust design Assessment of final solutions in 20 minutes
