Where Did This All Start? - 9/11 attacks were the onset of much of the terrorism we face today. - We officially invaded Iraq in 2003, and the number of troops grew over the years. - As we spent more and more money on the war, our economy became worse and worse. - It took 3,519 days, from 9/11, to kill Bin Laden. - 9/11 attacks were the onset of much of the terrorism we face today. - We officially invaded Iraq in 2003, and the number of troops grew over the years. - As we spent more and more money on the war, our economy became worse and worse. - It took 3,519 days, from 9/11, to kill Bin Laden.

Why is This Issue so Important? - Safety of soldiers, U.S. citizens, and innocent civilians in foreign countries. The war in Iraq took the lives of more than 4,000 troops. - Yearly we spend a mass amount of money that we can’t even afford. - Originally went to war to protect ourselves from any more, and potentially more dangerous attacks on the U.S.

EXTREME COSTS -As of 2008, $522 billion had been spent, and by the time we left Iraq, we had spent over $800 billion. -From 9/11, to Osama Bin Laden’s death, the United States spent $1.28 trillion for the war on terrorism. -In Iraq, $806 billion was spent, and in Afghanistan, $444 billion was spent. -Only 1% (or 8 billion) of the total money spent on the war went to veterans care.

How Will This Impact the Future? -Clearly not helpful to our current economic status Billion Spent -Has hurt many families -Could result in more future threats, and or deaths of innocent Americans, and others. On the flip-side, it could “scare” enemies away.

What are Democrats Views on This? -Oppose large increases on defense spending, because it takes away money that could be spent on domestic programs. -Believe that cooperation with foreign countries and programs will do more to keep the U.S. safe. -Think that money spent on the military should go to better train and equip our soldiers. -Oppose large increases on defense spending, because it takes away money that could be spent on domestic programs. -Believe that cooperation with foreign countries and programs will do more to keep the U.S. safe. -Think that money spent on the military should go to better train and equip our soldiers.

What are Republicans Views on This? -Support defense spending on weapons systems. -Would like to “project” our force around the world to keep us safe, and ahead of any enemy threats. -Tend to be more willing to send troops overseas.
