Basic Guidelines to Safely Ride a Bike Stephanie Shaw Comm 1010

Purchase a bike Make sure that it is made for your age and weight limit. Spider man bike is probably not the best option.

Adjust all of your equipment on your bike. * Check the brakes * Check the tire pressure * Raise the seat for proper height * Make sure the bell is working properly. * Check cargo and make sure it is secure * Use regulated hand signals * Reflective clothing * Don’t forget a helmet!

TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) Most common bike accident injury 87,000 TBI injuries resulted from cycling incidences out of 447,000 total head injuries in 2009

Cycling Laws to increase safety Use proper signals Ride in the same direction as traffic Ride as far to the right as practicable You cannot have a siren or whistle on your bike Do not carry a package or bundle that prevents using both your hands to control your bike. Always yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal when overtaking them You are required to have a white headlight, red taillight or reflector, and side reflectors, all visible for at least 500 feet any time you ride earlier than a half hour before sunrise, later than a half hour after sunset, or whenever it is otherwise difficult to make out vehicles 1000 feet away
