The Children’s Safe Drinking Water Project

In the U.S., we are lucky to have safe drinking water.

In other parts of the world, many people get drinking water from polluted streams and rivers.

4,000 kids die each day because they have no choice but to drink dirty water. Think of a jumbo jet full of children crashing every four hours.  Haiti Ethiopia  India   Bangladesh Honduras   Philippines  Haiti Ethiopia  India   Bangladesh Honduras   Philippines

Bangladesh  Monsoon climate, one of the wettest in world  Is less than 12 meters above sea level. If sea level rose 1 meter, 50% of the country would flood  Slightly larger than Louisiana land wise  Most densely populated country in the world  Population 156 Million (population of all these states combined: CA, LA, TX, NY, FL, AL, GA, MS, AZ, IL, OH, KY)  31 million people don’t have access to clean water

India  550,000 villages, over 1,000 local languages  Over 128 M people are without access to clean drinking water  In the city people only have access to clean water for a few hours a day  People bathe, play, drink, and do laundry in the same water.  Diarrhea causes over 1,600 deaths EACH DAY!

Honduras  Children and mothers spend 6 hours a day fetching water and carrying it home on their heads in big pots.  Electricity is not dependable and goes out at least 3 times a day.  In 1998 Hurricane Mitch destroyed water systems and killed 1,000s of people.  Honduras has big debt and a corrupt government.  42% of people have no access to clean drinking water.  Most babies die of waterborne diseases before their first birthday.

 Over population reduces the quality of the water. Pollution comes from homes, factories and animals.  Nearly 13 million people lack access to a clean water supply (15%).  Only 1/3 of the river systems in the Philippians are a good source of public water.
