Fossils. Essential Question How can fossils be used to help explain what happened in the past?
Remains of once living organisms. Form from decay and are buried by sediment. Sediment hardens into rock and preserves the shape of the organisms.

Vocabulary Fossil Terms March 10-14, 2014

mold The shape of a once-living thing left in sediment when rock formed

cast A cast forms when mud or minerals fill a mold. The cast has the actual shape of the living thing

fossil The hardened remains of a plant or an animal that lived long ago

extinct Describes a kind of living thing that is no longer found on Earth

Trace fossil Fossils that are marks left behind from an animal

Petrified wood a type of fossil in which wood has turned to stone.

amber Hardened tree sap that can trap and fossilize insects

decompose When once living things break back down into natural substances

Ice Age A time when huge sheets of ice cover much of the land. Many plants and animals become extinct because they can not live in the cold weather
