Australopithecus Questions What type of tools did the Australopithecus use? Explain. Who was Lucy? How did the Australopithecus speak?

Australopithecus Answers Australopithecus did not invent tools. Instead, they used natural resources like things that have already been formed, for example sticks and stones. Lucy was an Australopithecus who died, possibly by drowning in a river about 3.8 to 3.2 million years ago. Australopithecus did not have exact language, but they would use hand gestures and sounds. They did not have a specific language.

Homo Habilis Questions Did Homo Habilis have any religion or ceremonies? Did the Homo Habilis wear clothes and why? Why did Homo Habilis have to keep a close eye on their campfire?

Homo Habilis Answers No, Homo Habilis had neither any religion nor any ceremonies. Homo Habilis didn’t wear clothing because their bodies were so hairy it already kept them warm. Homo Habilis had to keep a close eye on the fire because if it burned out they didn’t know how to start it again.

Homo Erectus Questions When did Homo Erectus live? What did Homo Erectus use to hunt animals? How did Homo Erectus make fire?

Homo Erectus Answers Homo Erectus lived around two million to four hundred thousand years ago. They used spears, stones, and fire to hunt animals for food. They made fire by taking two sticks and twisting one stick against the other to make a spark.

Neanderthal Questions How long ago did the Neanderthals live? How did they make fire? How did the Neanderthals make their shelter, and what did they live in?

Neanderthal Answers Neanderthals lived from 100, ,000 years ago. A way Neanderthals made fire is by taking two stones made of pyrite and hitting them against each other over twigs, wood, or dry grasses so that the sparks ignite the tinder, creating a fire. The Neanderthals used animal hides to make huts and tents for shelter, and they also lived in caves.

Cro-Magnon Questions How long ago did Cro-Magnons live and where? What was their fire wish? What were three of the foods they ate?

Cro-Magnon Answers They lived 40,000 years ago, during the ice age. They first started out in Africa and Asia and then migrated to Europe and America. Some of the foods they ate were seeds, berries, nuts, fish, and other game. Their fire wish was when lightning struck, they’d hope it’d hit a branch for a fire to start.

Modern Human Questions Which human group has the largest brain? How complete was the baby Modern Human skeleton found in the cave? What aspects of the Modern Humans led them to being so successful?

Modern Human Answers Some scientists believe that Cro-Magnons may have had larger brains than Modern Humans, but Modern Humans were the most complex of all the Early Human groups. The baby skeleton was 100% complete! The Modern Humans were such a success because they worked together collaboratively and they farmed and domesticated animals.

Extra Questions What is the most interesting thing you learned from this Early Humans project? How did you like working with PowerPoint? When might you use PowerPoint again? Do you think Ms. McClure should use PowerPoint with students again? Why or why not?

Extra Question Answers Share answers aloud with your tablemates.

Early Humans Final Scoring  If you didn’t get any answers wrong, then hooray for you, and you have a score of 100%.  If you did get some answers incorrect, then add up the number you got wrong. Each question is worth five points, so multiply your number wrong by 5. Subtract the product from 100%, and you will have your percent. 93 – 100% = A73 – 77% = C 90 – 92% = A % = C- 88 – 89% = B+68 – 69% = D+ 83 – 87% = B63 – 67% = D 80 – 82% = B-60 – 62% = D- 78 – 79% = C+59% & below = F
