AIM: How does diversity occur within a species? 4/17/13 DO NOW: 1.Pick up today’s quiz & finish it. HOMEWORK: ILS Review Book 1.Read p Answer Questions #1-42 on the Scan-Tron Scan-Trons are DUE 8 AM

Why are there a variety of traits within a species? Sexual reproduction Mutation Why is variation within the species beneficial? Able to adapt to changes in the environment An advantage in competition It’s all about survival

How have humans positively impacted the variation of a within a species? Selective breeding Genetic engineering

How have humans negatively impacted the variation within a species? Destroy their living space or resources Kill them How does endangered species differ from an extinct species? Endangered – a species in danger of dying out Extinct – no more living organisms of that species

What is a Mutation? A sudden permanent change in an organism’s genetic material, or DNA. Are mutations helpful or harmful? Harmful – less able to survive Helpful – better adapt to the environment

What is the theory of evolution? Both individual organisms and whole species change over time. How do we know that the modern horse has evolved from a much smaller animal? Fossil evidence

What are fossils? The remains of organisms that died long ago What does the layer of rock which a fossil is found indicate? Its age The environment in which it lived

The diagram below shows the changes over time in a population of mice in the wild after a population of hawks has moved into the cold snow-covered environment. The white and dark mice differ only in color. Explain why there was a change in the population of mice?
