The Work of The Holy Spirit “How Does The Holy Spirit, Convict, Convert, & Sanctify?’” Lesson 4 Don McClain 65th St. church of Christ
A Study of The Holy Spirit Professed Divine revelation Professed miracles – Professed spiritual contacts and direct faith Professed direct leading The rise of mysticism and emotionalism has played a large role in attributing to the Holy Spirit things that we can be certain should not be. True spirituality is – Fearing God, and keeping His commandments as defined by His word. Don McClain 65th St. church of Christ

The Work of The Holy Spirit The Bible plainly affirms that the Holy Spirit has a major role in bringing about the Conviction, conversion and sanctification of the sinner. In Man’s Redemption (1) one must be "born of the Spirit" (Jn. 3:5). (2) One must be quickened (made alive JPN) by the Spirit (Jn. 6:63). (3) The Spirit came to "convict the world of sin" (Jn. 16:8). (4) The Spirit makes free from the law of sin and death (Rom. 8:2). (5) One must be sanctified by the Spirit (2 Thess. 2:13; 1 Cor. 6:11). (6) One is justified by the Spirit (1 Cor. 6:11). (7) One must be washed by the Spirit (1 Cor. 6:11). (8) One must be called by the Spirit (Rev. 2:17). To deny that the Spirit is active in conversion is to deny the plain word of God. The How of It: Due to the influence of Calvinistic theology, the major Protestant denominations teach that the Spirit operates upon the sinner in conversion in some mysterious or miraculous wav separate and apart from the written or spoken word of God. It is often said to be "better felt than told.“ This doctrine was a necessary outgrowth of the dogma of total depravity. The major difference between protestant theology and the Bible on this point is not WHETHER the Spirit operates in conversion, but HOW does he accomplish his work. Is with or without agency? There is not one thing that the spirit does for the sinner in conversion that is not done through the agency of the word. Those who contend that a direct operation of the Holy Spirit is essential to conversion need to tell us what the Spirit does for the sinner that the word cannot do. III. Consequences of the Theory of the Direct Operation of the Holy Spirit (1) Places all of damnation upon God. One cannot place all of salvation upon God, without at the same time placing all responsibility for damnation upon Him. (2) It mitigates the necessity of preaching the gospel. The Bible emphasizes the necessity of preaching the gospel to all men (Mt. 28:19,20; Mk. 16:15,16). “The Bible teaches that in conviction and conversion the Holy Spirit exercises a power or influence in addition to the written or spoken word” (p. 7). The Work of The Holy Spirit In Man’s Redemption John 16:7-11 (NKJV) . . . I will send Him to you. [8] And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: [9] of sin, because they do not believe in Me; [10] of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; [11] of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. The Work of The Holy Spirit In Man’s Redemption 1. elenchoµ (ejlevgcw , (1651) signifies (a) to convict, confute, refute, usually with the suggestion of putting the convicted person to shame; see Matt. 18:15, where more than telling the offender his fault is in view; it is used of convicting of sin, John 8:46; 16:8; gainsayers in regard to the faith, Tit. 1:9; transgressors of the Law, Jas. 2:9; some texts have the verb in John 8:9; (Vines Exp. The Work of The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit was to vindicate Jesus Christ & His cause to the world – In Man’s Redemption “because they do not believe in Me” Acts 2:22,23 “of righteousness, because I go to My Father” Acts 2:32,33 “of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged” (cf. 14:30) Acts 2:34-37 He would offer proof so compelling as to prick the conscience of the world and give it reason to move upon His claims. (And did so in Acts 2) Whether or not those so stricken to act was a matter of their own free will! (Acts 2:40) Of sin - because they refused to believe on the only begotten Son of God and because of this unbelief put Him to death. Acts 2:22-23 (NKJV) "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know-- [23] Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; Of righteousness – Because Jesus was raised from the dead and ascended to the right and of God and proclaimed Lord of Lord’s and King of king’s. Acts 2:32-33 (NKJV) This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. [33] Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. The Holy Spirit aided the apostles to a better and deeper understanding of the true meaning and purpose of the life of Jesus, His righteousness and that through Him they too could be made righteous. The Holy Spirit also revealed through the apostles the righteousness of God, Rom. 1:17, that is the means by which God makes men righteous. Of Judgment – The ruler of “this world” was the one behind the crucifixion of Jesus – John 14:30 (NKJV) I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. Acts 2:34-37 (NKJV) For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, [35] Till I make Your enemies Your footstool." ' [36] "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." [37] Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" The Work of The Holy Spirit Born of water and the Spirit Necessary to enter the kingdom Produces a change in thinking and manifested in a change of life In Man’s Redemption John 3:5-8 (NKJV) Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. [6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' [8] The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." Titus 3:5 (NKJV) not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, The Word of God is sufficient [Charts 15,16,17] James 1:21-25 (NKJV) Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. [22] But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. [23] For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; [24] for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. [25] But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. 1 Cor. 4:15 (NKJV) For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Romans 1:16 (NKJV) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 1 Cor. 1:18 (NKJV) For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. The Work of The Holy Spirit In Man’s Redemption Rom. 10:13-17 13For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” 14How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18But I say, have they not heard? The Work of The Holy Spirit Notice some examples of conversion - In Man’s Redemption The 3,000 in Acts 2:37-42 The 5,000 in Acts 4:4 The Samaritans in Acts 8:12 The eunuch in Acts 8:35-38 – Cornelius in Acts 10:6,22,33; 11:14 Lydia in Acts 16:14 The Corinthians in Acts 18:8 The Bereans in Acts 17:11,12 The twelve in Ephesus in Acts 19:5 a. The 3,000 in Acts 2:37-42 37Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39“For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” 40And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. . . . (This same pattern is seen over and over again . .. ) b. The 5,000 in Acts 4:4 4However, many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand. c. The Samaritans in Acts 8:12 12But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. d. The eunuch in Acts 8:35-38 35Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. e. Cornelius in Acts 10:6,22,33; 11:14 6“He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.” . . . 22And they said, “Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews, was divinely instructed by a holy angel to summon you to his house, and to hear words from you.” . . . . 33“So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God.” . . . .11:14 14‘who will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved.’ f. Lydia in Acts 16:14 14Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed (apply oneself to, adhere to) the things spoken by Paul. – (Heb. 4:12 . . 12For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.) g. The Corinthians in Acts 18:8 8Then Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his household. And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized. h. The Bereans in Acts 17:11,12 11These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. i. The twelve men in Ephesus in Acts 19:5 5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. By The Word Converting Don McClain 65th St. church of Christ

The Work of The Holy Spirit Conclusion Convicts Conclusion The very obvious conclusion is that the Holy Spirit is operative in the conviction and conversion of the sinner, but His operation is performed through the agency of the word of God or the gospel. The surgeon operates upon the physical heart of man, but he does it through the agency of certain instruments. The word of God or the gospel is the Spirit's instrument in Operating upon the spiritual heart of man. Or looking at it from another point of view, the Spirit operates in the conversion of the sinner by revealing the law of conversion; the law of the Spirit (Rom. 8:2). Hearing and receiving the testimony of the Holy Spirit is A Choice – Matthew 13:15 (NKJV) For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.‘ (cf.
