The Integumentary System

Integumentary System Includes the Skin, Hair & Nails

Functions to protect  gives moisture  keeps germs out  nails protect finger tips regulate body temp get rid of wastes (sweat)

Injuries to the Integumentary System (Wounds & Burns)

Wounds Scrapes  most common wound  usually don’t bleed much  dirt and germs rubbed in  important to clean well to prevent infection

Wounds Cuts  may have either jagged or smooth edges  caused by sharp objects  usually bleed freely

Wounds Avulsion  a cut in which a portion of skin or soft tissue is partially or completely torn away  significant bleeding

Wounds Puncture  caused by a pointed object (impaled object)  do not bleed a lot  easily infected

Treatment of Wounds Control bleeding & Prevent Infection

Burns May damage only the top layer of skin or damage skin and layers underneath

Burns First degree  only top layer of skin  skin is red and dry  sunburn

Burns Second degree  top layers of skin  red skin with blisters  may open and weep clear fluid

Burns Third degree  destroys all layers of skin and any or all underlying structures  look black or charred

Burns Severity affected by the  location on the body  size of the burn  victims age and medical condition

Burns Critical burns need immediate medical attention Can be life threatening

Critical Burns affect breathing cover multiple body parts  head, neck, hand, feet, genitals on a child or elderly person caused by chemicals, explosions or electricity

Treatment of Burns

Treatment Stop the burning Cool the burning Cover the burn

Don’t ice clean remove clean break ointment
