Blessed are the Righteous Psalm 1 July 18, 2010

1. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. 4. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. 5. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6. For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

The psalm was written by unknown author. Psalm 1 is a good introduction to the Psalter: The righteous, the ungodly & God. 1.Blessed: happy Counsel of the ungodly, or wicked person, conducts shaped by the worldly standards Standeth in the way of sinner Evil influences; no association with the evil man, drinking, premarital sex, stealing, etc. Sitteth in the seat of the scornful evil attitudes; no fellowship with those who scorn God

2. Delight: Law of God – Word of God How? Meditate: ponder or discuss, allow actions to be godly; day & night; living by the Word of God; rooted in God’s Word 3. Comparison of 2 ways Image for comparison: tree planted by the water Produced in season; no fruit after planting; root carrying water like God’s Word when meditate; prosper regardless of sinners’ achievements Example: Zacchaeus Planted – not accidentally; meditation in God’s Word brings forth fruit

Purpose: the production of fruit – Eph. 2: Ungodly: wicked; not in covenant relationship with God; like chaff which wind blows away Example: Peanuts 5. Not tolerate Ps. 130:3, Nahum 1:6, Ps. 24:3-5

6. The secret of godly man’s success measure not in godliness, but in that the Lord knows the way of righteousness Ps. 34:11-16
