Reading and Analyzing Poetry
Presentation transcript:

To analyze how a poem is structured through different techniques which connect or generate images.

Contrast is closely a technique that arranges pictures with strikingly opposing meanings. Example: He looks tough but he is kind- hearted. contrast can be stated or implied

Our clear eye is the one absolutely beautiful thing. I want to fill it with color and ducks The zoo of the new Whose name you meditate April snowdrop, Indian pipe, Little Stalk without wrinkle, Pool in which images Should be grand and classical Not this troublous Wringing of hands, This dark Ceiling without a star.

The poet contrasts happy childhood (color and ducks) to unhappy adulthood ( this troublous wringing of hands) The poet portrays two sides to her personality. Here she delights in the beauty of a young life : (I want to fill it with color and ducks) But later she feels horror : (troublous wringing of hands) The poet contrasts two types of aging: ‘wrinkle’ means to age poorly, ‘classical’ means to age well.

Repetition of a sound, syllable, word, phrase, line, stanza, or metrical pattern is a basic unifying device in poetry. Poets often repeat a single word or a whole stanza to emphasize a particular idea. Repetition is found in poetry which is aiming at special musical effects or when a poet wants the reader to pay a very close attention to something.

It’s the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge written in Look at the repetition of the word “water” Water, water everywhere And all the boards did shrink Water, water everywhere Nor any drop to drink

The poet makes us feel how vast the ocean is by repeating the word “water” over and over again. At the same time, it helps the reader to understand how thirsty the sailors are. For them the water is something that is everywhere and at the same moment farfetched. Repetition. introduces variations on the theme of water. The End
