Elemental Analysis

What is elemental analysis?  Process where a sample of a compound is burned in a furnace to form CO 2 and H 2 O  Combustion reaction occurs as oxygen gas goes through the sample  All gases produced are collected  Based on these collections, the mass of each element in the compound is determined  Convert lab data into % composition

Ex. 1 Aspirin is composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Using a 3.00 mg sample, an elemental analysis experiment yields 6.60 mg of CO 2 and 1.20 mg of H 2 O. What is the empirical formula for aspirin?

Ex. 2 A compound containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen is burned to give g CO 2 and g H 2 O. The molecular mass is 90u. If the original sample had a mass of g, what is the molecular formula for this compound?

Ex. 3 You Try! Combustion analysis was performed on a 2.04g sample consisting of C, H, and O. The analysis produced 4.49g of CO 2 and 2.45g of H 2 O. What is the empirical formula for this compound?
