Aims of the COIL project Project to develop online information literacy tutorials for students and staff at Chisholm Institute Basis for accredited modules integrated into training packages at Chisholm at future date
Project team Comprises: Library staff – project coordinator, content writers, technical advisor, student liaison facilitator, online learning/web developer facilitator Diploma of Multimedia students Core team of eight that meets regularly
Stages of the project Decision on framework of project and timelines Decision on content Decision on web design elements and structure of site Liaison with multimedia students to develop modules for the web
The Process Content pages written then edited for relevancy, brevity and consistency Development by students of test pages and templates Integration of the above Testing of site for useability Tweaking Launch product
Challenges Learning web writing skills and the basics of web design by content writers Agreement on design elements and feel Communication and understanding between library staff and students Finding the time to develop the tutorials Technical problems for students in creating the “bells and whistles”
Rewards Development of product that enables access to information literacy tutorials for all students and staff on and off campus 24/7 Collaborative effort between students and staff of the institution promoting goodwill Development of a project model that can be utilised in the future Increased library staff skills in online learning and web development packages
Future developments Endorsement by Board of Studies Learnscope funding for staff development Collaboration with teaching staff to develop other curriculum online modules Customisation of tutorials for information classes and for particular courses Accredited modules in information literacy as part of Chisholm courses
