Galatians 2: Presented by Bob DeWaay April 7, 2013

 The Greek says “the subjection” (submit); they made their demands binding for fellowship  Caving in on this would cause slavery and undermine the truth of the gospel Review: The truth of the gospel was at stake Galatians 2:5 (HCSB) But we did not give up and submit to these people for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would be preserved for you.

Paul is not Status Conscious Galatians 2:6 (NASB) But from those who were of high reputation (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality) well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me.

One Gospel to Two Audiences Galatians 2:7 (HCSB) On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised, just as Peter was for the circumcised

The same power, same gospel, but different audience Galatians 2:8 (HCSB) since the One at work in Peter for an apostleship to the circumcised was also at work in me for the Gentiles. The key word in the Greek is energeo_-- “operated”; a work of power.

The reputed pillars accept Paul and his message Galatians 2:9 (HCSB) When James, Cephas, and John, recognized as pillars, acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.  The “grace given” is a divine passive (by God)  “Pillar” is Greek for “supporting column”

 “The poor” here means “Jewish believers in Jerusalem”  Paul emphasized a collection for the poor in Judea Remember the Poor Galatians 2:10 They only asked us to remember the poor the very thing I also was eager to do.

 God does not show partiality, so do not boast  The universal call of the gospel must never be compromised  Christians must take care of one another and acknowledge their need for one another

1 Corinthians 15:1, 2 (NASB) For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised, God has chosen, the things that are not, that He might nullify the things that are, that no man should boast before God.

John 7:37, 38 (NASB) Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”

1 Corinthians 12:21 – 23a And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; or again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; and those members of the body, which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor,

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Benediction 2 Corinthians 13:14
