Jack hunts for pigs alone Jack is annoyed when a pig evades him and goes back to the beach where he sees Ralph and Simon building the huts As the other boys play around and relax, Ralph is preoccupied building the huts In order to cool down, they swim together in the lagoon while doing so Simon silently slips into the jungle alone

When Ralph accused Jack and the hunters of using hunting as an excuse from their duties, they started a small bicker Jack, Ralph and Simon work and discuss the behavior and actions of the other boys Simon helps the littleuns collect fruit and then quietly wanders into the jungle to Its beauty In order to cool down, they swim together in the lagoon while doing so Simon silently slips into the jungle alone

Setting

The Jungle (Positive) ‏ Simon’s impression: Beautiful place with ever- lasting peace Plentiful signs of life in the forest where Simon can sit and enjoy the view “When he was secure in the middle he was in a little cabin screened off from the open space by a few leaves. He squatted down, parted the leaves and looked out into the clearing…” [pg 72] Undisrupted beauty of nature, showing peace and innocence

The Jungle (Negative) ‏ Jack’s impression: Source of food; his territory for hunting Place of evil superstition; home of the devil “ ‘But you can feel as if you’re not hunting, but ---being hunted; as if something’s behind you all the time in the jungle.’ ” [pg 67]

The Lagoon Where Jack and Ralph try to wash away feelings of animosity “All the warm salt water of the bathing-pool and the shouting and splashing and laughing were only just sufficient to bring them back together again.” [pg 70] Similar to the forest in a way that significant events which are related to Jack and Ralph’s relationship happen in these two places

Understanding “ ‘Well. They’re frightened’ ” [pg 66] “ ‘So we need shelters as a sort of ’ ” [pg 66] Rational “ ‘ I’ll come back and go on with the shelter.’ ” [pg 70]

Unable to resist savage instincts “ ‘If I could only get a pig!’ ” [pg 70] At the start of the chapter, Jack: “dog-like, uncomfortably on all fours yet heeding his discomfort” [pg 61] “bright blue, eyes that in this frustration seemed bolting and nearly mad” [pg 62] Does this hint the soon to dominate innate evil within Jack?

Rude “ ‘ You and your fire!’ ” [pg 68]

Kind towards children “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands.” [pg 71] Christ (bible) = Simon? Is Simon somewhat similar to Christ? Simon is reserved yet deep and knowledgeable, like Jesus “He looked over his shoulder as Jack had done at the close ways behind him and glanced swiftly round to confirm he was utterly alone.” [pg 72]

Jesus had the tendency to go to desolate places to seek refuge alone/ to pray for guidance e.g. before he died, he went to a peaceful place to communicate with God Therefore can Simon be Lord of the Flies’ equivalent to Jesus of the Bible?

Signal Fire  Literally: Fire used to attract attention Figuratively: Hope, Civilization / Law and Order (fire caters to many of man’s needs) ‏ In Chapter 3: Jack mocks the fire, which also means that Law and Order / Civilization was losing control over Evil / Savagery

Evidence: “ ‘You and your fire!’ ” [pg 68]

Huts  Literally: Temporary shelters made of leaves; futile efforts in constructing equivalent of houses Figuratively: Safety, Civilization (houses are necessities) ‏ In Chapter 3: Ralph and Simon were unable to erect decent, firm structures  Law and Order could not be fully established; Civilization could not be achieved

Evidence: “Two shelters were in position, but shaky. This one was a ruin.” [pg 64]

The Beastie / The Snake-Thing Literally: An illusion Figuratively: Fear, Result of Imagination gone wild, Destroyer of Stability, Order In Chapter 3:  The Beastie causes great distress amongst the boys, especially “littleuns”; it also changes the boys’ impression of the island  This shows the negative and disastrous effects of imagination  Discussion about the Beastie was kept to the minimum

Evidence: “As if it wasn’t a good island.” [pg 66] “ ‘ They talk and scream. The littleuns. Even some of the others. As if ” [pg 66] “The two boys flinched when they heard the shameful syllable. Snakes were not mentioned now, were not mentionable.” [pg 66]

Themes

Savagery Jack shows signs of savagery in this chapter Hunting awakened the hidden savagery within Jack and his bloodlust begins henceforth He becomes increasingly addicted to the hunting of pigs, and is extremely disappointed when he fails to kill one “swearing, he turned off the trail and pushed his way…” [pg 63]

Leadership Ralph Able to think of the best way to help the boys benefit – Building shelters to acquire refuge from the elements He puts the boys’ welfare before his by building the huts for them Proves that Ralph is a good leader Jack Instead of leading the hunters (his duty), he hunts alone and allows the hunters to swim

“ ‘ I went on. I let them go. I had to go on. I ’ ” [pg 65] Jack does not have true leadership as he is unable to coordinate the group of hunters appropriately

Civilization VS Savagery Conflict between Ralph (Civilization) and Jack (Savagery) increases Started bickering and quarrelling over the boys’ course of action
